3/27/09  We found some information on certain Patriotic "blogs" which we wanted to address.  We have been contacting "individuals and organizations" (from these blogs) who have certain opinions on our DREAM students to be able to speak out as well.

However, we have been denied interviews with these "individuals".  If you are from one of these "organizations" and would like to voice your opinion on our documentary please let us know.  We are presenting a fair and balanced documentary on a real life issue.  Otherwise we will state in our documentary when asked for an interview the "person/organization" declined to comment.

Article on "An Unfinished Dream" by Mario Contreras of www.VivaDocumentary.com

"My thesis project, Untitled DREAM Act Film, is transitioning from casual pre-production to real pre-production. What does that mean? It means that it’s time to stop playing around and start working on this film. One way that I thought of to do this was to talk to someone who has done or is doing what I’m about to set out to do.

Margarita Reyes is a University of California Los Angeles student studying Chicano Studies. She’s collaborating with UCLA film minor, Andrea Ortega, on An Unfinished Dream, a social justice documentary following the lives of undocumented students in the California university system. She was kind enough to answer some of my questions."

Emmy Winning Documentary Filmmaker Almudena Carracedo blogged about our documentary.

I credit this beautiful documentary for also inspiring me to produce my own documentary.  Margarita Reyes (Executive Producer)

"Made in L.A. follows the remarkable story of three Latina immigrants working in Los Angeles garment sweatshops as they embark on a three-year odyssey to win basic labor protections from a mega-trendy clothing retailer. In intimate verite style, Made in L.A. reveals the impact of the struggle on each woman’s life as they are gradually transformed by the experience. Compelling, humorous, deeply human, Made in L.A. is a story about immigration, the power of unity, and the courage it takes to find your voice." www.MadeinLa.com

Thank you so much Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar!

  • Correction:  The article states that all three students interviewed are undocumented in the U.S.; however, 2 of the 3 are in fact U.S. Citizens.

The Mural is LA.

So we haven't been posting for a few months. Took the time to launch the REAL Eastside arts and culture magazine. And I don't say that lightly. Kind of interesting that New Angeles Monthly, who I was happy to write for, is now only going to publish  quarterly. Say hello to Brooklyn & Boyle: Art & Life in Boyle Heights and Beyond, our humble effort to create a print space for good writing and community. Everyone knows by now that Tu Ciudad Los Angeles went belly up. The gravy train was good for awhile, but again, the business model was flawed. Not that mine isn't, but we're four issues into our modest monthly and the response has been overwhelming. Most of our support has come from small art galleries, studio spaces, local eateries, mom-and-pop businesses and artists or arts promotion professionals themselves. Who says EastSiders aren't proud of their progress and their cultural contributions? I'm happy to host the next blogero meeting at the gallery/artspace that came about as a result of a collaboration with Josefina Lopez (REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES), who is one of the most produced Chicana playwrights in the country and a now a formidable novelist in the Chica Lit scene. So here's a piece in the current issue, now that that the mag is catching it's stride. With four down and another in the hopper, B & B is a proud part of the emerging East 1st arts corridor as a new neighbor on a three block stretch that includes East Side Luv, Liliflor Open Studios, Casa 0101 theaterspace and the soon to be open arts hall where our very own Josefina López will be celebrating the publication of her book with a birthday party. Read the essay below and try to make the community fundraiser for "An Unfinished Dream" documentary at Brooklyn & Boyle next Thursday on the 19th.

Another Documentary In The Works

According to the Underground Undergrads's blog, there's another documentary on the works. The documentary is the brainchild of a couple of UCLA students who belong to the AB 540 group IDEAS. After marches and capitol rallies, they've gathered enough footage to make An Unfinished Dream. In partnership with Goose Egg Productions and actress Margarita Reyes, the film focuses on the DREAM Act, a law that would allow many AB 540 students the possibility of a better future by giving them a path to citizenship through a college degree.
As of now, the film is on post-production, but it's asking for more volunteers who are willing to help out with this very low budget project. Here's a very moving trailer of the film, which is planned to be released on Spring 2009.

This was a write up they did on our project. 11/09/08

"A group of UCLA students launched set off on a journey months ago, following every action, meeting, and moment of the Dreamers movement out of IDEAS at UCLA, the California Dream Network, and the larger movement as a whole. From the highly visible marches and rallies, to the deeply personal moments of doubt and despair, they have been there for months, camera in hand."

We'll have more on these young producers in a few weeks. For now, be sure to pay them a visit over at An Unfinished Dream.
